How Do I Work Out The Field Of View On A Microscope?

FIELD OF VIEW = FIELD NUMBER / OBJECTIVE LENS MAGNIFICATION

What is the field number?

This is the second number on your eyepieces. For example, an eyepiece with WF10X/22 written on it has a field number of 22.

EXAMPLE 1: If you’re using a compound microscope:

If your eyepieces have written on them: WF10X/20

And you’re using the 40x objective lens.

You will have a field of view of:

20 / 40 = 0.5mm (500 microns)

EXAMPLE 2: If you’re using a stereo / dissecting microscope:

If your eyepieces have written on them: WF10X/22

And you’re using the 0.7x zoom increment.

You will have a field of view of:

22 / 0.7 = 31.42mm
