BIOLOGICAL MICROSCOPES

Biological microscopes are available in a wide range of types due to the extraordinary range of specimen types.  For observation of individual cells, tissues, blood and micro-organisms an upright microscope is most commonly used.

If the cells, micro-organisms or tissue are growing in culture then an inverted microscope can be used.  For non-transparent, larger specimens such as plant material or insects a stereo microscope is more suitable.

compound microscope

Upright / Compound Microscopes

Upright Biological Compound Microscopes are used for observing thin, transparent, slide mounted specimens under magnifications typically ranging from 40X to 1000X.

Inverted microscope biological

Inverted Microscopes

Inverted Microscopes are used for observing materials, cells and organisms in culture and in the bottom of flasks, petri dishes, microtitre plates and tubes.

fluorescent microscopes for fluorescence microscopy

Fluorescence Microscopes

Fluorescence Microscopes are used to observe specimens that emit fluorescent light at magnifications ranging typically from 40X to 1000X.

Digital microscopes

Digital Microscopes

Digital Microscopes are available in a huge variety of formats.  They all have the common feature of including a built in camera which will convey either live images to a computer or a video display or images and video to memory devices.

Stereo microscopes for dissecting

Stereo / Dissecting Microscopes

Stereo/Dissecting Microscopes also known as low power microscopes are used for the observation of larger specimens that may be non-transparent  ‘lumps’.  Typical magnifications used are 7X to 90X.
